Boi Akih

BOI AKIH is a jazz/world music duo based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, featuring guitarist and composer Niels Brouwer and vocalist and lyricist Monica Akihary, the winner of the 2023 Boy Edgar Prize, the most prestigious Dutch award for jazz and improvised music. Together, they have formed the heart of the ensemble BOI AKIH since 1997. For more than twenty years, boundless curiosity has driven BOI AKIH to pursue new experiments and discoveries. Starting with guitar and voice, BOI AKIH develops exciting and groundbreaking repertoire that reveals the layers of different musical traditions. BOI AKIH's unique sound emerges from the constant interaction between the musicians and their diverse influences. This sound, both unconventional and accessible, blends acoustic elements with electronic soundscapes, complemented by the versatile, warm voice of Monica Akihary. She alternates between singing in English and Haruku, the language of her father's island in the Maluku Islands. In BOI AKIH's musical projects, their deep, personal explorations result in a harmonious blend of seemingly incompatible sounds, rhythms, and tonalities.
