The Powder Room by R4D

Hue City

This book by Claire Betita de Guzman introduces the notorious Ativan Gang, scammers in Manila who befriend, drug, and rob solo tourists. Twenty-five-year-old Carmen, the gang’s newest member, flees to Hue, Vietnam, to escape arrest and search for her mother. There, she meets Hai, a receptionist with ambitions of running his own hotel. When Hai encounters Marina, a wealthy Singaporean, he sees her as a solution to his financial troubles. As Hai begins an affair with Marina, he learns of Carmen’s criminal past. When Hai’s hotel business fails, he devises a scheme to steal Marina’s savings with Carmen’s help, threatening to pull her back into her former life. It explores their intertwined paths through the faded streets of Vietnam, the gritty areas of Manila, and the cosmopolitan environment of Singapore as they navigate the treacherous journey of starting over.
