Reality Check Exhibition by Ida Lawrence

A brilliant idea wakes her. If she allows herself to sleep again, morning might reveal its shortcomings. So, she leaps out of bed, drinks a coffee, and starts sketching. By lunchtime, she is wrestling with wood, canvas, pliers, staples, and the drying times of acrylic gesso. It’s the afternoon now, and she is roughly applying colors to the taut fabric. The curator arrives at the gallery, tiptoes towards her, dodges a flying blob of magenta, and musters his calmest tone: “Um, what are you doing?” It’s 35 minutes before the exhibition opens, and she’s trying to start a new painting.

Reality Check is a solo exhibition of autofiction story-paintings by Ida Lawrence, curated by Dwi S. Wibowo. Playfully mixing images, text, patterns, and even the odd fact, Lawrence brings stories to life set in Indonesia, Australia, Germany, and beyond. Some might say the paintings aren’t very realistic; others might find fresh perspectives. What’s your take?

Ida Lawrence, who created the festival artwork—a stunning composition of books forming letters, representing the theme in Sanskrit amidst a vibrant array of colors, textures, and patterns—will be at the opening on Saturday, 19 October 2024, from 18:00 to 19:30 (Bali time).

Dwi S. Wibowo is an Indonesian poet, author, and art curator. His first collection of short stories, Khotbah, was published by the independent publisher Alpha Centauri in 2016. Some of the art projects he has worked on include the Wall of Indonesia exhibition (Bloo Lagoon Art Space, 2016), Bali Emerging Artist #1 (Sika Gallery, 2021), as well as several solo exhibitions featuring various artists. Some of the literary awards he has received include the 2009 Radar Bali Literary Award and recognition as the best short story in the Youth Festival 2013 from the Ministry of Youth and Sport.

Dwi S. Wibowo adalah seorang penyair, penulis, dan kurator seni asal Indonesia. Kumpulan cerpen pertamanya, Khotbah, diterbitkan oleh penerbit independen Alpha Centauri pada tahun 2016. Beberapa proyek seni yang pernah ia kerjakan antara lain pameran Wall of Indonesia (Bloo Lagoon Art Space, 2016), Bali Emerging Artist #1 (Sika Gallery, 2021), serta sejumlah pameran tunggal yang menampilkan beragam seniman. Beberapa penghargaan sastra yang pernah ia terima antara lain Radar Bali Literary Award tahun 2009 dan penghargaan cerpen terbaik di Youth Festival 2013 yang diselenggarakan oleh Kementerian Pemuda dan Olahraga.

Ida Lawrence is an Indonesian-Australian artist known for her painted stories that merge images and text. Her most expansive work was created on an eight-by-fifteen meter wall at Urban Spree in Berlin, while her shorter pieces have been exhibited internationally at venues such as KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, the 15th Asian Art Biennale in Dhaka, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre in Sydney, and Cemeti Institute for Art and Society in Yogyakarta (with Woven Kolektif). Between 2022 and 2023, Lawrence participated in the BPA// Berlin program for artists and was awarded the Marten Bequest Scholarship for Painting. She is represented by ISA Art Gallery in Jakarta and is based in Berlin.
