2026 Writing Retreat
Book your Spot

Award-winning author and journalist Peter Godwin has built an international reputation for writing that braids personal narrative with political history. Born in Zimbabwe and long based between continents, his memoirs explore family, exile, loyalty, nationhood and moral courage with rare clarity and restraint. His work demonstrates how the personal story, when shaped with precision, can illuminate an entire era.

In this three-day intensive, participants will work closely with Peter in a focused, intimate setting designed for serious writers of memoir and narrative nonfiction. This is not a lecture series. It is a working room. A space to interrogate memory, refine voice and strengthen narrative architecture.

Throughout the retreat, participants will gather around beautiful long-table Balinese feasts curated by Janet DeNeefe, cooked in her home kitchen.

Peter Godwin was born and raised in Zimbabwe. He worked as a human rights lawyer and a foreign correspondent for the Sunday Times and the BBC. He has authored seven non-fiction books, including Mukiwa, which won the George Orwell Prize and the Esquire, Apple, and Waterstones awards, and When a Crocodile Eats the Sun, which won the Borders Original Voices Award. His book, The Fear, was selected by the New Yorker as a best book of the year. He has taught writing at Wesleyan and Columbia and served as President of PEN American Center. His latest book is Exit Wounds: A Story of Love, Loss and Occasional Wars.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

The retreat is designed for writers working on memoir, autobiographical fiction, or narrative nonfiction who are ready to explore memory with discipline and courage. Participants should be prepared to engage deeply with both their own work and that of others.

Below is the itinerary for the three-day writing intensive, including sessions, workshops, and curated meals:
Sunday, 18 October - Memory as Material

09:30 – 13:00 | The Working Room
We begin with the essential question: what makes lived experience compelling on the page? Peter Godwin will guide participants through the process of identifying the central tension within their story, the narrative thread that gives memoir its momentum. Through close discussion and generative exercises, writers will explore:

  • Finding the narrative spine
  • Transforming memory into scene
  • Writing family and real people with nuance
  • The ethics of truth-telling

This session emphasises clarity over confession and structure over sentiment.

Mid-morning pause for coffee.

13:00 | Lunch
Balinese seasonal specialities served at a long communal table, encouraging conversation and reflection.

Afternoon at leisure for writing or rest.

18:00 | Twilight Aperitif
An evening aperitif featuring a bespoke Casa Luna signature cocktail. Each guest will enjoy one complimentary signature cocktail, with additional beverages available to order.

An open conversation on witness, responsibility and the risks of writing close to home.

19:30 | Welcome Dinner at Casa Luna
A generous shared meal and the beginning of a temporary literary community.

Monday, 19 October - The Self Within History

09:30 – 13:00 | The Working Room
Memoir unfolds within a wider social and political landscape. Drawing from his own experience writing about Zimbabwe’s turbulent history and his family’s story, Peter will explore how to braid the intimate with the historical.

Topics include:

  • Integrating context without overwhelming narrative
  • Writing exile, belonging and displacement
  • Managing chronology and time shifts
  • Balancing reportage with reflection

Participants will draft new material and workshop selected excerpts, receiving focused, practical feedback.

Mid-morning pause.

13:00 | Balinese Lunch

A seasonal menu celebrating local ingredients and tradition. Afternoon optional writing hour for those wishing to continue their work in a quiet, supported space.

18:00 | Twilight Aperitif
Signature cocktail service. Conversation turns to doubt, discipline and sustaining long-form nonfiction. Each guest will enjoy one complimentary signature cocktail, with additional beverages available to order.

19:30 | Shared Dinner
Curries, Asian greens and banana-leaf specialities with Balinese coconut-based desserts.

Tuesday, 20 October - Structure, Revision & Public Sphere
