Over two days, from Monday, 19 to Tuesday, 20 October, you will uncover the essential techniques for finding and refining your voice. Presented with Mongrel International Inc., this intensive gathers you with fellow writers through structured critique, in-class exercises and revision sessions. Highlights

Day one covers introductions, a guided discussion of your first writing assignment, and an in-class writing exercise, followed by a second assignment discussion and two revision exercises. Day two opens with a reading exercise and another in-class exercise, then a discussion of your third assignment and two further exercises on craft and revision, ending with a final take-home assignment and a private conference. Ahead of the retreat, you will submit two short prose pieces and an essay for workshopping, with an optional final piece afterward for personalised feedback from Xu Xi.

Inclusions

The retreat includes a two-day writing intensive with Xu Xi, a pre-retreat reading document of participant excerpts, guided assignment discussions and in-class writing exercises, plus a take-home assignment with optional written feedback. Curated lunches and morning and afternoon tea from Casa Luna are also included.

Flights to and from Denpasar, travel insurance, visas, as well as a Festival Pass are not included.

This three day intensive is a working room rather than a lecture series, a space to interrogate memory, refine voice and strengthen narrative architecture. Participants gather around long table Balinese feasts curated by Janet DeNeefe.
