Alang-Alang Stage

This film is an expanded performance combining traditional Balinese singing with archival footage from the Bali 1928 Archive project. Narrated live by archivist and director Marlowe Bandem, the performance explores the meaning of 'Solahang'—'to perform' or 'to dance' in Balinese. Featuring traditional Balinese dances filmed in the 1930s by pioneers like Colin McPhee, Miguel Covarrubias, Jane Belo, Rolf de Maré, Margaret Mead, and Gregory Bateson, it offers a glimpse into Bali's rich cultural heritage and living traditions. By showcasing these historical recordings, the performance deepens our appreciation for Bali’s spiritual devotion, cultural legacy, and its enduring exchanges with the world.
