Amin Saikal

Amin Saikal, AM, FASSA, is Emeritus Professor of Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies at the Australian National University, Adjunct Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Western Australia, and Adjunct Senior Fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). He has received the Order of Australia (AM) and is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. His recent books include How to Lose a War: The Story of America’s Intervention in Afghanistan by Yale University Press in 2024, Iran Rising: The Survival and Future of the Islamic Republic by Princeton University Press in 2021, Zone of Crisis: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and Iraq by I.B. Tauris in 2014, and Islam Beyond Borders: The Umma in World Politics by Cambridge University Press in 2019 – co-author. Saikal has published in major dailies such as The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, The Sydney Morning Herald, and The Age, and frequently comments on national and international TV and radio networks.
