Benjamin Hegarty is an Australian Senior Research Associate in the Asia and Pacific Health Program at the Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney, and a Research Affiliate at the School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography at the University of Oxford. As a medical anthropologist, he is interested in how sexual subjectivity and gendered embodiment shape the distribution of health, illness, and inequality based on fieldwork in urban Indonesia. The majority of his research has explored the impacts of structural violence on transgender communities in Indonesia. He is currently a French Institutes for Advanced Studies Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies Paris, working on a new project entitled Symbiotic Viruses: More-than-Human Anthropology, Queer Theory, and Virology.
