Novieta Tourisia is an Indonesian textile and mixed media artist based in Ubud, Bali. She has worked with natural dyes and fibers for her artworks and wearables over the past ten years. Always a crafter since childhood, it was only in her early 20s that a personal pilgrimage to her maternal homeland, West Sumatra, revealed that some of her great-grandmothers were weavers and dyers. This ancestral matriarchal reconnection and her work with barkcloth artisans in Poso, Central Sulawesi, inspired and empowered her to pursue artisanal craftswomanship. She left her years-long career in tourism and, in 2015, founded an artisanal textile studio known as Cinta Bumi Artisans.
This unique workshop expresses the liveliness of Bali’s tropical plants through botanical eco-printing on traditional barkcloth, sourced by Cinta Bumi Artisans from their partner communities in Central Sulawesi, and on a silk scarf. Each leaf and flower brings its own shape and color to the design experience and its own magic to what emerges at the end of a creative journey, skillfully guided by the Cinta Bumi Artisans and Threads of Life’s dye studio team. Participants will receive a 30 x 30 cm piece of mulberry barkcloth and a 30 x 200 cm silk scarf as part of the workshop.
All workshop tools and materials, as well as snacks, beverages such as coffee and tea, free-flowing drinking water, and lunch, are provided. Please note that this workshop is not suitable for children under 10 years old.
