Novieta Tourisia is an Indonesian textile and mixed media artist based in Ubud, Bali. She has worked with natural dyes and fibers for her artworks and wearables over the past ten years. Always a crafter since childhood, it was only in her early 20s that a personal pilgrimage to her maternal homeland, West Sumatra, revealed that some of her great-grandmothers were weavers and dyers. This ancestral matriarchal reconnection and her work with barkcloth artisans in Poso, Central Sulawesi, inspired and empowered her to pursue artisanal craftswomanship. She left her years-long career in tourism and, in 2015, founded an artisanal textile studio known as Cinta Bumi Artisans.
Explore the alchemy of mark-making on barkcloth or cotton with a mordant intermediary. A mordant fixes color, and printing with a mordant before dyeing creates a surface design. Working with community-sourced materials—Cinta Bumi Artisans’ traditional barkcloth from Central Sulawesi and Threads of Life’s Symplocos leaf mordant from Flores—uncover intricate patterns and natural colors through an immersive experience with plant materials, guided by the Cinta Bumi Artisans and Threads of Life’s dye studio team. articipants will receive a 40 x 40 cm piece of mulberry barkcloth and a 50 x 50 cm 100% cotton handkerchief.
All workshop tools and materials, as well as snacks, beverages such as coffee and tea, free-flowing drinking water, and lunch, are provided. Please note that this workshop is not suitable for children under 10 years old.
